Listen First
Good communication starts with listening. Really listen to what your child is saying, not just waiting for your turn to talk. Get down to their level, make eye contact, and show you're paying attention.
Use Simple Language
Match your language to your child's age and understanding. Use simple, clear words. Explain things in ways they can understand, and check that they've understood before moving on.
Validate Their Feelings
Even when you need to set limits, you can validate feelings. "I know you're angry, but we can't hit" acknowledges the emotion while maintaining the boundary. This helps children feel heard.
Be Honest (Age-Appropriately)
Children appreciate honesty. You don't have to share everything, but be honest in age-appropriate ways. If you don't know something, it's okay to say so. This models honesty and curiosity.
